Fleming’s Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant program receive national accreditation

Published

Peterborough ON – (June 17, 2020) Fleming College’s Occupational Therapist Assistant (OTA) and Physiotherapist Assistant (PTA) program has been awarded the status of accreditation by the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant Education Accreditation Program (OTA & PTA EAP).

The term of the accreditation is six years, April 2020 to April 2026. Many employers across Canada only hire OTA and PTA graduates from an accredited program, and Fleming’s status will increase graduates’ opportunities for employment.

“Fleming’s programs are laser-focused on quality and skills development, and we take a great deal of pride when we are recognized by accreditation programs such as the OTA & PTA EAP,” said Maureen Adamson, President, Fleming College. “Our goal is to produce graduates that are sought after and stand out. The OTA & PTA accreditation will ensure Fleming graduates have the skills they need for a rewarding career as occupational therapist assistants and physiotherapist assistants.”

The OTA & PTA EAP is responsible for the accreditation of occupational therapist assistant and physiotherapist assistant education programs across Canada. To receive accreditation, programs must meet candidacy status which confirms that a diploma is granted by the educational institution, affiliated with an institution authorized under applicable law, includes a minimum of 500 practicum hours and the program head/coordinator/director of the program is a registered occupational therapist or physiotherapist.

Fleming’s OTA & PTA program is a four-semester diploma program offered at Fleming’s Sutherland Campus. The program offers cross-training in both occupational therapy and physical therapy. Graduates become critical thinkers who demonstrate problem solving ability with strong interpersonal and communication skills. Students are assigned to a variety of clinical settings throughout their studies, and have an opportunity to accumulate a minimum of 500 clinical hours.
