Fleming Hosts Iron Chef Competition

 Peterborough ON – April 29, 2010 – Local high school students will have the chance to test their skills against Fleming’s best at next week’s Culinary Cast Iron Chef Competition on May 4.Two teams, both consisting of seven grade 11 and 12 students, three Fleming Culinary students and one local chef, will prepare a three-course meal for 40 people and five judges.“The Iron Chef Competition is about Fleming reaching out to students in the local school boards and letting them experience college life for a day,” said Culinary Program coordinator David Hawey.Tickets for lunch are $20 and all the proceeds from the lunch will go towards culinary bursaries and scholarship awards.Judging will be based on culinary skills, teamwork, professionalism, timing, creativity, taste and presentation.Winners will be announced at 2:30 p.m. and a graduating high school student from each team will walk away with a $1,000 credit towards culinary supplies and equipment from the Fleming College bookstore.To compete, the grade 12 students were required to submit a sample three-course menu, an essay on their reasons for wanting to compete in the competition and their future educational and career goals, a resume and a letter of reference from their culinary/hospitality teachers.To make a reservation please call 705-749-5530 x 1487. The students will be working at Fleming from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and lunch is served at 1 p.m. Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campuses in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton.
