Fleming College welcomes federal budget investment in post-secondary education

Published

Fleming College congratulates the federal Liberal government on its first budget and welcomes the government’s clear recognition of the essential role that post-secondary institutions will play in revitalizing Canada’s economy.

Fleming is especially pleased to see the government respond to the call for additional infrastructure funding with the new Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund, which commits $2 billion over the next three years. Coupled with the $9 billion Building Canada Fund, this will help drive a much needed renewal in college infrastructure, 60% of which currently exceeds its 40-year life cycle.

“This federal budget, along with the recent Ontario budget announcements, will result in a significant transformation in our sector and present both an opportunity and an obligation to ensure the maximum positive impact on our students and our communities is realized,” said Fleming College President Tony Tilly. “Many initiatives in the budget, including a strong focus on water and green technologies, are closely aligned with Fleming’s strategic priorities and expertise.”

The substantial increase in Canada Student Grants, along with additional support for youth employment measures and co-op work placements, will contribute to greater access and higher quality educational opportunities for students.

Having recently signed the Indigenous Education Protocol, Fleming is pleased to see new investments with respect to Indigenous Education.

Fleming is also pleased to see increased levels of support for the research granting agencies, including $45 million allocated to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Given the impressive results that modest investments in applied research have yielded to date and the dramatic growth in college and institute capacity, the college welcomes the government’s commitment to redesign and redefine how it supports innovation and growth.
