Fleming College to offer Syrian refugees full scholarships for English language bridging program

Published

Refugees taking the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program at Fleming College can now apply for a full scholarship at the college to further their English language studies.

“A famous philosopher once said, ‘The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.’  By assisting refugees who are learning English as their second language, we help them expand their horizons and engage in the new world around them,” said Fleming College President Tony Tilly.

Qualified students will have the opportunity to apply for a full scholarship for the English as a Second Language Bridge (ELB) program at Fleming, starting in September 2016.

Funds are available for up to three students per term to access the scholarship and the scholarship could be used for one or two semesters. The scholarship program is expected to continue for three years.

“This much needed support for Syrian refugees settling in our communities will provide the bridge to pursue further post-secondary studies,” said Brenda Pander-Scott, Executive Director of International Education and Registrar.

ELB is an intensive college transition program in which students learn the academic English skills necessary to succeed at a post-secondary level. Upon completion of ELB, students have the opportunity to enter into a post-secondary certificate or diploma program at the college.

Currently there are 46 students taking the LINC program at Fleming College. Twenty-three of those students are from Syria.
