Fleming College to host Skills WORK! Camp

Peterborough ON – (July 3, 2014) – Fleming College will once again host a popular summer day camp that teaches students about the skilled trades.

The Skills WORK! Camp will have 18 campers and will run July 7-11, 2014. The camp will take place at the McRae Campus, with a one-day trip to the Frost Campus on Thursday, July 10 to explore careers in heavy equipment and arboriculture.

The camp is offered in partnership with Skills Canada – Ontario, and provides students in grades 7 and 8 with an opportunity to explore careers in skilled trades.

Throughout the week, campers develop communication, problem-solving and teamwork skills through various activities and hands-on workshops in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding and final assembly. Students also participate in an entrepreneurship project, which will be presented at a Campers’ Showcase on Friday, July 11.

The schedule is:
Monday, July 7
1 to 4 p.m. – Carpentry Workshop

Tuesday, July 8
9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. – Plumbing Workshop
1 to 4 p.m. – Electrical Workshop

Wednesday, July 9
9 a.m. to noon – Welding Workshop
12:30 to 4 p.m. – Project Painting/Final Assembly

Thursday, July 10 – FROST CAMPUS
9:45 a.m. to noon – Heavy Equipment Activities (Heavy Equipment Centre)
1 to 2 p.m. – Campus tour
2 to 3 p.m. – Arborist/Tree Climbing Demonstration

Friday, July 11
1 to 4 p.m. – Campers’ Showcase (Mayor Darryl Bennett will be attending)

All of the workshops take place in lab rooms 205 or 204 at the McRae Campus on Bonaccord Street.
