Fleming College Students Win Five Medals at Ontario Skills Competition

Peterborough ON – May 20, 2010 – One gold, two silver and two bronze medals were awarded to Fleming College students at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition in Waterloo on Wednesday.Eleven students from Fleming tested their skills against students from all over the province on May 17th and 18th in the largest skills competition in Canada. The event attracts over 30,000 participants and spectators from across the province with 1,800 elementary, secondary and postsecondary students competing in categories to test their skills. Gold Medal – Culinary student Amber Peterson in the Restaurant Services category. Amber will be proceeding to the Canadian Skills Competition, also in Waterloo, on May 20th to 23rd.Silver Medals – Morgan MacBain, a Culinary student competing in the Culinary Arts category and Esthetician student Tricia Beeton, competing in the Aesthetic Skills category.Bronze Medals – Culinary students Gary Brasenell (Culinary Arts). and Jessica Knott (Restaurant Services).Students were coached by Culinary Program Coordinators Chef Steve Benns and Chef Dave Hawey and Sylvie Provost as well as Esthetician Program Coordinator Tracy Partridge from the Cobourg Campus. Fleming’s Culinary display booth, a portable kitchen featuring ice sculptures and carved apple swans, won second prize in the small booth display competition.Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campuses in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton.
