Fleming College students present Irregular Journeys, an exhibition about the Syrian refugee experience

Published

Students in the Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management program at Fleming College are bringing the story of Syrian refugees to the community through a special exhibition, Irregular Journeys.

Irregular Journeys highlights the risks and hardships that Syrian refugees have endured, including the difficult decision to leave their homes, their perilous journeys, and how these new Canadians are settling in Peterborough and across the country. The exhibit will also feature a timeline detailing the history of refugees in Canada.

The exhibition will be located at Sutherland Campus (599 Brealey Dr., Peterborough) on the third floor of the B wing, next to the Whetung Theatre. During the exhibit opening on Saturday, April 2, guests will be invited to participate in hands-on activities in the Conservation Lab in room C1306. This will allow visitors a behind the scenes look at what refugees may have experienced and the choices they have had to make. Visitors can also add their personal experiences to the students’ interactive timeline. The lab will also feature displays about the Cultural Heritage Conservation and Management and Museum Management and Curatorship programs.

Irregular Journeys will continue until June 2016. The exhibition opening on April 2 coincides with Fleming College’s spring Open House, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Parking will be free that day. Additional information will be available online in time for the opening at irregularjourneys.wordpress.com.
