Fleming College Student Wins National Award

Lindsay ON – July 22, 2010 – Fleming’s Geographic Information System student Nicole Benishek has won first prize from the Canadian Cartographic Association (CCA) for Best Interactive Map.“We’re very fortunate to have Nicole associated with our program and we wish her continued success,” said Stewart O’Brien, professor of Environmental & Natural Resource Sciences at Fleming College. The GIS programs at Fleming’s Frost Campus are unique in Canada, featuring partnerships with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Natural Resources of Canada, The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and with many leading industry organizations like TELUS Geomatics, Autodesk Canada and the Geomatics Industry Association of Canada. The award-winning project titled Kawartha Highlands Signature Site Provincial Park Canoe Routes, explores the famous Kawartha Highlands and delivers a modern way to map a canoe route through the provincial park.Benishek said she is happy her project received national recognition and hopes it will illustrate what is possible with online cartography.“People don’t know what is all possible.
