Lindsay ON – July 20, 2010 – Frost Campus will host a large group of Ontario Rangers from around the province next week for activities such as tree climbing, natural resource crime scene investigations and team building exercises. Over 90 Rangers, high school students working for the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) for eight weeks this summer, are expected at the two-day event on July 28 and 29.“This is a wonderful partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources. It is very positive to get the Ontario Rangers here on campus and experience what Fleming has to offer. It’s a great way to show them they can come to Fleming College and train for the career they want in the natural resource and environmental field,” said event organizer Derrick Laplante, Bio-Diversity Commons Technologist at Fleming College. The workshops run by Fleming’s expert instructors focus on natural resource management, hands-on experience, as well as team building exercises to strengthen the skills and knowledge of the next generation of environmental leaders.Sandy White, Manager of Youth and Learning at the Ministry of Natural Resources, was equally enthusiastic. “By the time our Rangers arrive here at Fleming College, they are halfway through a summer of working hard outdoors every day on great biodiversity-related projects. These workshops really add to their work experience by opening their eyes to think about their own future plans – where they want to study after high school and which type of career they might like to pursue. With the knowledge, skills and enthusiasm that have been shared with them at both our ministry and at Fleming College, they go forward with a great attitude towards becoming tomorrow’s environmental leaders,” she said. The work done by the Ontario Rangers during the summer is part of the MNR’s natural resource management projects that support biodiversity and combat climate change in Ontario. This summer, rangers are also celebrating the International Year of Biodiversity. Located in the heart of Central Ontario, Fleming College has campuses in Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg and Haliburton.
