Fleming College hosting Indigenous Education Community Forum on Post-Secondary Partnerships Program

Published

Nogojiwanong/Peterborough ON – (March 28, 2014) – Fleming College will host an Indigenous Education Community Forum to provide a space to discuss Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada’s (AANDC) Post-Secondary Partnerships Program (PSPP). The PSPP replaces the Indian Studies Support Program as of April 1, 2014.

AANDC is currently accepting proposals from eligible post-secondary institutions for the PSPP. According to the AANDC website, the funding opportunity is designed to create courses that respond specifically to the educational needs of First Nations and Inuit students and communities. Additional goals listed are as follows:

• Focus on the labour market, with specific outcomes and objectives;
• Lead to high-demand jobs in the Canadian economy or within First Nation or Inuit communities (such as Band governance);
• Use innovative and efficient delivery methods to increase the availability of education in remote communities;
• Contain short duration, undergraduate level courses;
• Include funding partners with a firm commitment to monetary participation.

A key component of the proposal is support from First Nations and Inuit communities in the planning and delivery of the project, as well as in the determination of the specific employment needs of those communities. In Fleming’s commitment to Indigenous education and Indigenous students, the college has extended an invitation to local and surrounding First Nations communities who stand to be directly impacted by such proposals now and in the future.

The forum is to take place on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the territory of the Mississauga at the Sutherland Campus located at 599 Brealey Dr., Nogojiwanong/Peterborough, ON.

All interested parties are invited to attend, including First Nations Elders, Chiefs and Council Members, Education Managers, Secondary Education Counselors, former and current Indigenous students, community members, and Fleming College Staff and Faculty. We will be meeting in the lower café where a traditional meal will be served.
