Culinary student takes gold at the Canadian Skills Competition

A Fleming College Culinary Management student has come home with a gold medal after competing in the Canadian Technological Skills Competition in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, May 20-23. Michael Scaife, a recent culinary management graduate, now working at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club, won the gold medal in the Restaurant Services category.Michael was mentored and coached by Sylvie Provost, a Professor in the Culinary Management program.   “The competitors from the other provinces were very strong; the education that I received from Madame Provost in the applied project component of the culinary management program gave me the tools and skills necessary to win at both the provincial and national level,” said Mr. Scaife.Professor Provost’s years of management and service experience in high end food service operations all over Canada, has given Fleming Culinary students the opportunity to learn and hone skills necessary to succeed in the guest service component of the hospitality industry.“I am very proud of the way Michael represented Ontario and Fleming College at the competition. He is dedicated to professionalism and excellence and it is a pleasure to see all of his hard work rewarded,” she said.During the 2 days of competition each participant was required to show their ability in different areas of a fine dining restaurant. Challenges included folding napkins, making different cocktails and mock tails, blind spirit and wine identification, preparation for meal service as well as demonstrating tableside service cooking and more.For the first time the Canadian Skills Competition was hosted in Charlottetown, PEI. This national event brought together over 500 young Canadians who have successfully competed at the provincial and territorial level to vie for the national Champion. Not only were the competitors tested against exacting standards in more then 40 skilled trades and technology areas but they were also competing against the best of the best from Canada.Beyond recognizing excellence, one of the main goals of this event and of skills programming throughout the year across Canada is to raise the awareness of and interest in the skilled trades and technologies as a preferred career path for young Canadians.     – 30 -For more information:     Laura Copeland, Communications Officer, copeland@flemingc.on.ca
