CICE students win Special Olympics video contest

Published

Students in Fleming College’s Community Integration through Co-operative Education (CICE) program who participated in a video contest to end the use of the r-word have won first place.

In May, the students created a video for the Spread the Word to End the Word contest, hosted by Special Olympics Ontario. The Spread the Word to End the Word campaign encourages people to pledge to stop using the word “retard” with a goal to create more accepting attitudes and communities for all people.

The Fleming video was shared on social media and garnered the most views among contestants (more than 3,250 and counting).

The students have won a tour of the TSN building in Toronto, and their video will be showcased across Ontario in the upcoming promotion of the 2014-15 Special Olympics Ontario Spread the Word to End the Word Student Video Contest.

Special Olympics Ontario will be holding an event at Fleming College in the fall to celebrate the win as well as to launch the 2014-15 contest.

The video included Fleming students, faculty and staff with the assistance of family and friends. You can link to the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNqoYr5cpkA&feature=youtu.be
