Alumni Association announces call for nominations: Premier’s Awards

Published

Do you know a Fleming College graduate who has achieved success in his or her field of study and that has made a difference in their community? If you do, the Fleming College Alumni Association is now accepting nominations for the 2008 Premier’s Awards. The Premier’s Awards for Graduates of Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology honour the positive social and economic impact college graduates have on their communities. The Awards were launched in 1992 to mark the 25th anniversary of Ontario’s colleges. This year’s awards ceremony will take place on February 23, 2009 at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto, Ontario. The Premier’s Awards acknowledge outstanding graduates from six categories: Creative Arts and Design, Community Services, Business, Health Sciences, Technology and a Recent Graduate. Chosen from nominations submitted by Ontario’s 25 colleges, nominees must demonstrate career success related to their college experience and must have made a significant contribution to their community. All provincial nominees will receive a framed certificate signed by the Premier of Ontario and each of the six recipients will receive a bronze medal as well as a $5,000 donation directed to the recipient’s college. Fleming College last had a provincial winner in 1995 when Cindy Pettersen-Rugsten won the honour in the Heath Sciences category for her international nursing career. Cindy donated her $5,000 prize to help two students from Africa attend Fleming College. “A Premier’s Award nomination brought unexpected rewards. Representing Fleming College was a thrill at the Premier’s Awards Banquet. Having the opportunity to meet many inspiring people was very enriching. It was not about winning, but about participating. I left the event never having been so proud of being a college graduate,” says 2005 Business category nominee Lynn Price.  “The nomination provided opportunities to meet faculty and re-connect with the college. I credit Fleming College for helping me build the confidence to start my career. The intimate size of the institution and communication between faculty and students was outstanding and I continue to carry an inner confidence instilled by caring, dedicated and experienced teachers. My Fleming experience was truly a success.” To obtain a nomination package, drop by the Fleming College Alumni Association office at 500 Dobbin Rd. in Peterborough, call 749-5509, or email us at alumni@flemingc.on.ca. All nomination forms are due to the Alumni Association Office by 5 p.m. on Monday, September 8, 2008.  – 30 – For more information, contact: Nicole Lytle-Grady                         &nbs p;                         &nbsp ;                                            Development/Alumni Officer                         &nbs p;                         &nbsp ;                          Fleming College Foundation                          &nbs p;                         &nbsp ;                      (705) 749-5530 x 1390                          &nbs p;                         &nbsp ;
