Fleming College Hosts H1N1 Vaccination Clinic

The Peterborough County-City Health Unit has been granted permission by the government to start vaccinating the general public.The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Anyone who interested in receiving the vaccination should bring their health cards and drivers licenses.During the clinic, the general public attending will park in M Lot, free of charge from 9:30 am until 2:00 pmThe Pay & Display lot will be closed Friday morning and access will be restricted to persons with small children or mobility problems that are coming to the clinic.Information released by the health unit earlier this month stated despite that influenza-like illnesses have peaked in the health unit region; they still recommend the vaccination to prevent H1N1 that is expected to continue to spread throughout this winter.

Fleming College Remembers the Montreal Massacre

On December 6, 1989 an enraged gunman shot 14 women at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique. Canada now honours this day as a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women. The Sutherland Campus in Peterborough will host a 20th Anniversary Vigil and White Ribbon Campaign on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 from noon to 1 p.m. in the main foyer. The Frost Campus in Lindsay will host a Montreal Massacre Memorial Service on Monday, December 7 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Crombie Theatre. There will also be a memorial exhibit and white ribbon campaign along The Frost Campus Discovery Trail from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Fleming College Staff Give Back

“There are so many ways to give back,” said Leona DeCarlo, in charge of events and planning with the Foundation. The initiative began after appreciation letters were sent out to the volunteers and people in the community who have contributed to the Fleming College Foundation. The staff packaged and sorted through food at the food bank’s warehouse on Friday morning and afternoon. The Food Share staff was grateful for the extra help.  “The hunger problem is continually growing, year after year,” said Chris Kawalec, office manager of the Kawartha Food Share. “Volunteers are the backbone of the Kawartha Food Share and food banks everywhere,” he continued.

November 24 Declared Fleming Students against Impaired Driving Day

The Student Administrative Council has initiated a campaign to raise awareness among the campus community, and the public, on the dangers of impaired driving. During the week of November 23 to 27, awareness campaigns will be ongoing throughout Fleming College and informational material will be available on impaired driving as well as excess drinking and the effects that alcohol has on the human body. “This day is meant to raise awareness throughout Fleming College and the City of Peterborough of the dangers of impaired driving,” said Ryan Young, chairperson of the Student Administrative Council at Fleming College. The November 24 event will start with the proclamation by Mayor Ayotte, then an address from Fleming College President Tony Tilly, followed by a presentation by Matt Evans, executive director of Ontario Students against Impaired Driving.

Fleming College Welcomes Future Students at Fall Open House

Visitors can meet with faculty, students and alumni, as well as tour the campuses, and find out more about Fleming s services including financial aid and learning supports. Students interested in attending Fleming in January 2010 can participate in the college s express application service at Open House. Fleming offers more than 40 programs that start in January, with many of those programs featuring fast-track pathways to two or three-year diplomas.Open House will also feature program demonstrations such as tree climbing with the Arboriculture students at Frost Campus, and a crime scene investigation with the Police Foundations students at Sutherland Campus. Fleming College Scientist Heads to Paris

The SubWet 2.0 software program is used in the design of wetlands to treat waste water and improve water quality. Dr. Wootton, recently added cold climate simulation models to the software program. Wootton is the Senior Scientist and Director of the Centre for Alternative Wastewater Treatment at Fleming College in Lindsay, Ontario. “Fleming’s participation in the upcoming Consultative Meeting on Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) for Wastewater Management Partnership at UNEP offices in Paris is a result of the very successful and recent collaboration between UNEP and CAWT on modeling software.” said Dr. Brent Wootton, “I am pleased to be able to represent Fleming College and will explore opportunities for future collaboration”. CAWT is leading research on the construction of wetlands to naturally treat wastewater in the Arctic, part of Canada’s International Polar Year activities. Dr. Wooton will be in Paris from December 6 to 9, 2009.
