Course Number: ARTS0328
Please note: You must be able to carry stone weighing up to 30 lbs.
This course will provide instruction in traditional sculptural methods, such as the use of point, toothed and flat chisels, specialized rasps for final shaping, and a variety of techniques for proper use with various types of stone. If you are working at a beginner skill level you will receive instruction in traditional hand-tool methods. Ample assistance will be available in developing subject matter. Practical applications will be the primary emphasis, supported by some theory. You can expect to complete a small sculpture during the course. If desired, you will also receive a brief introduction to stone sculpture using power tools. Minimal amounts of time will be available if you would like to use the power tools as availability of electricity and compressed air will impose some limitation on the number of students who can work in this area simultaneously. If you are working at a beyond-beginner level of skill, you will be challenged with more advanced work. If you wish to subscribe to this area, it is recommended that you have some power tools or be prepared to buy them as only limited loan/demonstration tools are available for use. The instructor will have a small assortment of tools (including sandbags) on hand that may be purchased at reasonable prices. The instructor will also have his own master set of professional tools, including power tools, and these will be demonstrated in hands-on sessions as part of the instruction. Whether beginner or experienced, you can expect to work in a non-competitive, light-hearted atmosphere.
