The Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005 (PSISA) has had significant legislative changes that identify professional requirements for security guards. The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services' Training and Testing Regulation will commence April 15, 2010 stipulating that all new applicants will be required to successfully complete basic training and pass the ministry test prior to applying for a security guard licence under the Act. This 40 hour Basic Security Guard course will ensure that the successful student will possess the required basic knowledge to pass the Ministry test and the skills to perform the basic duties of a security guard in Ontario. Topics to be covered during this training will include an introduction to the security industry, the Private Security and Investigative Services Act and Ministry, the code of conduct, basic security procedures, report writing, health and safety, emergency response preparation, the Canadian legal system, legal authorities, effective communication techniques, sensitivity training and use of force theories. Participants are asked to bring $25 (cheque or cash) on the first day of the course to cover required course materials.
