Course Number: ARTS1328
Please note: This course is not suitable for beginners.
Instruction is suited to intermediate and advanced artists interested in investigating 20th century and contemporary artistic approaches and applying them to portraiture in a variety of media. In the 20th century, portraiture (along with art in general) underwent a revolution, becoming a vehicle for all manner of artistic issues and concerns. By incorporating deeply personal, expressive approaches, unusual materials, inventive processes, as well as conceptual and formal constructs, artists challenged and investigated the nature and potentials of portraiture, vastly widening its scope. Working in a variety of media, explore hands-on some of the same ideas that leading 20th century artists grappled with, in order to expand possibilities in creating portraits that go beyond likeness, using the genre as a means of achieving personal expression and artistic depth.
