Course Number: ARTS1253
Please note: Intermediate sewing skills are required to participate in this course.
Explore the fascinating potential of the embellished and altered textile surface and form applied to the creation of jewellery (bracelets, earrings, necklaces, beads) and fashion accessories. Experiment with a large variety of techniques, applications and materials enabling you to create unique textile surfaces with rich and exotic textures, gorgeous colour and 3D, manipulated forms. Quick explorations with samples lead to the production of embellished surfaces enhanced with gilding, painting, stiffening, beading, padding, stuffing, wiring, collaging, folding, gathering, wrapping, fraying, patchwork, laminating and stitching. Apply lustrous gold leaf to colourful painted backgrounds, wrap exotic tassels and cords, embroider inspirational rich textures with a variety of special threads, floss and fibre, incorporate collected beads and transformed 'found' objects, and learn how to create beautiful beads and cords. Discussions will include contemporary trends in 'Soft' jewellery including the enormous impact of tribal body adornment, the intriguing integration of re-purposed, up-scaled, recycled textiles and translating your design inspirations into a special, unique artwork of your own choice. You are required to bring a reliable sewing machine in good working order.
